It was the first building in Rio de Janeiro that was designed and built (1932) with the purpose of being a synagogue. For several decades it was the center of the social and religious life of the Jews in Rio de Janeiro. In the Grand Temple local Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
